Feature Article
Good Web Site Design Practices
by George Rogers

The Goal
To create a departmental web site that is professional in appearance, easy to maintain, up to date, cost effective to develop, easy to navigate, content is searchable, and the site follows established policies and standards.

Learning by Example
Learning from someones mistakes and accomplishments is a common practice in almost any field. It is easier to learn from other existing web sites how to create a calender, create a biography page, layout pictures, include audio, use logos, create footer, look at different methods of navigation, page counters, user surveys and forms.

Professional Appearence
Being consistant across all web pages within a site makes it look professional. To be consistant there are a few things you can do. One, limit the number of font styles and sizes to a minimum and be consistant in there use. A title or header should be the same font style and size on all pages. Two, use color only to highlight or draw attention to a specific string of text. Three, limit the use of clipart images and use appropriate photographs instead.

Graphics
Limit the graphics to 2 or 3 images per web page. Make sure the pictures are needed and are discriptive of the web page. Crop the graphics to get rid of any unwanted background in the image. This will make the images smaller and faster to load. The file names should have some meaning without having to load the file. They should also be lowercase without any special characters except the "_" underscore.
