What are "Web Guidelines" and why do we need them?

by George Rogers

Guidelines are ment to bring different ways of doing things together and to create a way of conveying that information to existing and new people entering the university. Guidelines are created to streamline operations, save money, and minimize risk of development by a single department.

Web site guidelines within the University of Texas will help all departments and clinics take advantage of lessons learned from other departments and personnel. These guidelines will allow web authors to create web sites that are not maintenance intensive. The guidelines will include standard templates for web pages that can be used by new web authors. The learning process will become much shorter.

The "Web Guidelines Handbook" has been written by George Rogers of the Office of Academic Computing. It has been reviewed and revised by "UT-Houston Web Coordinators" for use within the university as a guide on how to develop web sites. There will be a general discussion about the guidelines at the next Brown Bag Lunch scheduled on October 16.
